Poetry from North
Reading Children
Here are selections written by children in a poetry workshop, during
the 2007 summer reading program, "Catch the Beat at Your Library."
The Paperclip
I am different than
other paper clips because
I go around in a circle.
I am red. I like red.

The Bunny's Day
One day Bunny went for a walk
in the woods. She founds jacket.
The jacket had a hood and a pocket.
In the pocket there was a pencil.
The pencil was a magic pencil.
The pencil could fly.
The pencil took the bunny everywhere.
The pencil took the bunny to France,
China, New York, Maine, and the beach.
The bunny was happy and the pencil
was happy, too.
The bunny bought a beach house.
She was very happy.

I am
kind of heavy to be a box.
I have a rose on my cover.
It can hold teeth.
I think I'm more beautiful
than other boxes.

Nice Red Keychain
connects to keys
Keys unlock many things.
Many things do different things.
Different things do wonderful things.
If you lose the nice red keychain
you cannot do the different
wonderful things.

Rubber Band
I am like a rubber band.
I can be stretched to the point of breaking
but always bounce back without a scratch.
I am never thought to be of any importance
until the day you really need me and I snap.

"Angsty Penny"
Apathy implores you
to pass me by.
Oh, the minimal effort it would take
could break your back, in your mind!
But you'd bend your spine
for a dime, wouldn't you?
(Maybe a nickel, if the mood should strike.)
But never a penny.
No--not me!
It's me you just can't like.
