North Reading Reads 2011

We invite you to join the North Reading community for our eighth town-wide reading program.

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary, the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, we have selected, March, the 2006 Pulitzer Prize- winning novel, by Geraldine Brooks, as the title for our town-wide read.

March is set during the Civil War. Mr. March, the absent father in Little Women, is a chaplain who has gone to offer his services during the war.

The Rocky Mountain News calls March "Fully imagined.." The Christian Science Monitor says (March"" is a wholy original and engrossing story about a man whose lofty principles are scorched by his failings during the Civil War."

This Reader's Guide for March includes a a list of discussion questions. This interview with Geraldine Brooks will also shed light on how she came to write the novel.

A former correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, Geraldine Brooks is the highly regarded author of two other novels, and two works of non-fiction. Her book Caleb's Crossing, is forthcoming in May 2011.

You will find copies of March at he library. You may also support the Friends of the Library by purchasing a copy of the book through this special Amazon link.

Music of the Civil War

North Reading is proud to claim composer George F. Root, as one of its important residents. He moved to town when he was six. Root wrote the first song of the Civil War, "The First Gun is Fired," after hearing about the Battle of Fort Sumter. He lived at Willow Farm, in North Reading. One of his most famous Civil War songs is "Battle Cry of Freedom."

Here is a blog post from the North Reading Historical and Antiquarian Society
with further information about George Root.
You can listen here to some selections of Civil War songs.

The Lawrence Civil War Memorial Guard
gave a presentation about the local members of
