READING COUNTS BOOKS

Did you know that we have Reading Counts books here at the library?  Like the middle school library, the Reading Counts books here are designated by an orange sticker on their spine.  The books are inter-filed with the regular paperbacks and hard covers in the Teen Corner on the 1st floor of the library (just like at the middle school library).  Some of the books are in the Children's Room on the 4th floor - those are separated and on top of the low bookshelf by the chapter books.

We also have copies of the Reading Counts list on both the 1st and 4th floors.  If you can't find a book that you like, we can request a copy for you from another library or recommend a similar title that you may like.

TWO FEDERAL GRANTS FOR TWEENS AND TEENS!

IMLS Logo

The library is pleased to announce that is has received two grants that will benefit teens. Both are from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

The first grant is a two-year $15,000 grant, Serving 'Tweens and Teens to be used to improve services, materials, and space for the youth of North Reading. The second is a one-year, $5,000 Equal Access grant.

The funds will be used to purchase new furniture for the teen section, provide educational and creative workshops, and to purchase new library materials for teens, such as books, graphic novels, audi books and DVD's.

YAB, the library's Youth Advisory Board is helping to make decisions about these new offerings. Please consider joining YAB. It is open to all teens in grade 6 to 12. Please contact Kate Bell: kbell@mvlc.org or call her at 978-664-4942.

All workshops, programs, and materials are brought with federal funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Teens learned all about movie make-up at the workshop led by Erik Rodenhiser in July. The workshop was part of the federal Equal Access 'tweens and teens grant.

Andy Fish demonstrates a manga drawing at a LSTA Tweens and Teens workshop in December.
